Energy: ENEA-CTI report shows energy performance improvement in the residential sector

The energy performance of housing in our country is slightly improving. According to the Annual Report on the Energy Certification of Buildings by ENEA and the Italian Thermotechnical Committee (CTI), in 2020 the energy performance certificates (APE) in the intermediate and lower classes decreased in the residential sector (-1.2% compared to 2019) to increase in the higher energy classes.

The non-residential sector, on the other hand, confirmed the increase in APEs in the less efficient classes (+ 3.5%), already recorded last year, even if the majority falls in the highest and intermediate energy classes (approximately 55% compared to 40% in the residential).

Of the approximately 950,000 APEs analyzed, three quarters concern buildings built before 1991 and almost 6% the more recent ones (2016-2020); about 85% of the certificates regards transfers of ownership and leases, just over 3% new buildings, almost 4% energy redevelopments and less than 2.5% major renovations.

"The outcomes of the 2021 report show that a strengthened collaboration with Regions and Autonomous Provinces makes it possible to follow new paths leading to an increased effectiveness and potential of the EPAs", said ENEA President Gilberto Dialuce. "An improvement in collecting and processing data strengthens the SIAPE, the Information System on Energy Performance Certificates, which, gradually, will be the primary data source on the energy characteristics of properties across the country. The results obtained - he continued - are very interesting in a context in which updating the method for building classification and harmonization at the EU level is of topical interest ".

"This edition highlights how the reference data has improved, enhanced by data analysis to provide more and more information on the interest of the market, the relationship with Regions and Autonomous Provinces consolidated and how awareness has spread among operators about the availability of a tool increasingly valuable for the real estate sector ”, pointed out CTI President Cesare Boffa. “An actual manual - he said- to read the information collected in the SIAPE in an aggregate way. An important achievement, which will improve thanks to our commitment and the collaboration of all the actors involved.

The Report, now in its second edition, has significantly increased the database used for detailed analyses, which almost doubled compared to 2019 (approximately 950 thousand APEs compared to 540 thousand in 2019); an increase that made it possible to conduct in-depth investigations of greater statistical and qualitative value to monitor the evolution of the energy performance of the national real estate stock.

Moreover, the addition of Emilia-Romagna and Molise in 2020 increased the number of Regions that supply the SIAPE, which is managed by ENEA. Three other regions (Valle d'Aosta, Marche and Sicily) have begun data transfer during 2021.

In 2020, ENEA created the portal SIAPE to enable citizens, professionals, companies and public administrations to analyze the certificates contained in the national system and monitor the status of the energy requalification of the national building stock.
