Energy: ENEA participates to IEA’s CITIES Technology Collaboration Programme
ENEA is increasing its international work on sustainable urban development by joining the IEA CITIES Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP CITIES), part of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Italy’s participation was made official by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, which appointed ENEA as the national representative, as the Italian Contracting Party. The programme is managed in Italy by ENEA’s Department for Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources, as part of wider efforts to support the green transition in cities, improve international cooperation, and build a global research agenda for sustainable urban living. ENEA is actively involved in defining the programme’s priorities, shaping its governance, and working with international partners such as the Urban Transitions Mission (UTM) and the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM). Representing Italy, Roberta Boniotti (Institutional Affairs and EU Relations Service, ENEA Brussels) has been appointed as Delegate, and Paola Clerici Maestosi (Division for Tools and Services for Critical Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Communities) as Alternate.
As a first concrete step, ENEA hosted the first meeting of the TCP CITIES Executive Committee at its headquarters in Rome.
“This is a strategic opportunity to showcase Italy’s know-how in urban innovation and to strengthen our presence on the international stage,” said Giorgio Graditi, Director General of ENEA. “We’re ready to help guide the development of more resilient, inclusive, and energy-smart cities”.
Stefano Pizzuti, Head of the ENEA Unit for Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Urban Development, opened the meeting and welcomed participants: “It is a great honour for ENEA to host this first Executive Committee meeting. We are committed to making this collaboration a success and to contributing actively to the international dialogue on sustainable urban development,” he said.
This new role confirms ENEA’s importance in global scientific and technical cooperation, while also bringing real benefits to Italian cities – such as new pilot projects, exchange of best practices, and access to tools for better urban planning.
