Transport: ENEA-Enac project to decarbonise airports gets underway

Enac and ENEA have launched the project SAVES, which deals with the integration of sustainable energy vectors, including hydrogen, into the logistics systems of the Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa airports. The two airports, managed respectively by Aeroporti di Roma and SEA Milan Airports, were selected by a specific ENEA-Enac Commission as part of a tender to identify one or more significant case studies at a national level. The project is part of a collaboration between Enac and ENEA which started in 2022.

Energy: Innovative supercomputers solutions to advance renewables and fusion

Boosting performance of photovoltaic, hydroelectric, wind and in the future nuclear fusion energy sources with new generation supercomputers capable of solving one trillion operations per second ('exascale') is the objective of the three-year project EoCoE-III, funded by the European Joint Undertaking for High Performance Computing (EuroHPC JU) which aims to make the European Union a world leader in supercomputing.  The project comprises IT and renewable energy experts from 18 public and private European organizations, including ENEA, the Cnr and Universities of Trento and Rome Tor Vergata for Italy.

Environment: ENEA makes marine data more available

Making marine health data more available, accessible, interoperable and reusable, that is FAIR. This is the objective of the EMODnet Data Ingestion project, which aims to make more available and enrich the total data collected by the European Marine Observatory and Data Network (EMODnet), the largest European network to observe seas and oceans.

Energy: Dialuce (ENEA), decarbonisation requires the energy system to become smarter

“The path towards decarbonisation requires an integrated, coordinated and transversal approach, which has as its common thread the need for the energy system -understood as a set of critical and non-critical networks and infrastructures, production, transport, distribution, storage and end use systems- to become smarter”.

Cultural heritage: From ENEA a novel technique to restore damaged monuments

Restoring damaged peperino marble monuments with novel methods employing nanomaterials, advanced diagnostics and sensors, 3D models and drones to cut intervention times and costs was the focus of the project COLLINE, coordinated by ENEA, funded by the Lazio Region and presented during the workshop "New Technologies for Cultural Heritage", which took place in the ENEA Frascati Research Center. The project, whose participants included the Universities of Tuscia and "Sapienza" of Rome and the two companies De Feo Restauri and Eagleprojects, focused on two artworks in peperino in Viterbo: the pulpit of the church of San Francesco alla Rocca and the fountain of San Faustino.

Space: From ENEA and ASI advanced biotechnology for human nutrition in spaceflights

ENEA, as part of the ReBUS project funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), which includes the Cnr, Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Thales Alenia Space Italia, Kayser Italia, Telespazio and the Universities of Tor Vergata, Pavia and Federico II of Naples as coordinator, has developed an insect based system converting waste produced by astronauts into fertilizers to grow microgreens, providing fresh food in long-duration spaceflight missions.
